Gueterres could stay overnight at Conference on Cyprus

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres

The UN Secretary-General feels it is important to attend the Conference on Cyprus and the effort to facilitate the talks led by his Special Advisor Espen Barth Eide and United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, Stephan Dujarric said when asked to explain why Antonio Guterres is devoting so much of his time and effort to the Cyprus question.

“If his presence is critical to resolve this issue it’s important for him to be there. There are many crises throughout the world. Obviously some have caused more pain and destruction than others but I think we also have to look at it from the point of those who are living these crises,” he said, replying to questions.

The Cyprus issue, the UN spokesman pointed out, “has been going on for so long. There has been an absence of an ongoing conflict which is welcome but it doesn’t mean that there hasn’t been human tragedy and human pain for the inhabitants of the island and if the Secretary-General’s presence can help finally resolve this conflict and soothe all wounds, then I think it’s a good use of his time.”

The Secretary General is also able to multitask and has been staying in touch with envoys on all sorts of other crises, he noted.

“When his physical presence is necessary, he will be where he needs to be,” Dujarric added.

Asked to say what the UNSG expects from the talks, in particular discussions on security and guarantees, Dujarric refrained from getting into the details of the talks.

“Obviously we would like to see the situation resolved, but I’m not going to get into preemptive details at this point,” he added.
