The Wind Will Carry Us to Kaimakli

By  Emmelia Georgiou

The Cyprus Contemporary Film Centre presents Cinema at the Yard: Abbas Kiarostami Weekend. A year after his death, the event will pay tribute to the memory of the most celebrated and highly acclaimed Iranian director, Abbas Kiarostami. The event will take place over the weekend in the outdoor garden of Xanthis 3 Cinema, in Kaimakli

Kiarostami was a film director, screenwriter, photographer and film producer. Active from 1970, Kiarostami had been involved in over 40 films, including shorts and documentaries. He attained critical acclaim for directing the Koker Trilogy, Taste of Cherry, The Wind Will Carry Us and many more films.
He was also a poet, photographer, painter, illustrator and graphic designer.

On tomorrow and Sunday, the film The Wind Will Carry Us (1999) will be screened at 8.30pm. Before the screening tomorrow, a short introduction will be given by film historian and specialist on the theory of cinema Doros Demetriou. Just before the screening on Sunday – at 8pm – a free screening extract from the 2003 Iranian documentary Five, also known as Five Dedicated to Ozu (directed by Kiarostami) will be shown.

Five consists of five long shots, averaging about 16 minutes each. Four of the five have fixed camera positions.

The title of the film is a reference to a poem written by the modern Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad. The film was nominated for the Golden Lion of the Venice Film Festival and won the Grand Special Jury Prize (Silver Lion), the FIPRESCI Prize, the CinemAvvenire award, along with other numerous nominations and awards. It is also a follow up to another of Kiarostami’s films, The Taste of Cherry (1997).

The film is an idiosyncratic drama and tells the story of Behzad, Keyvan, Ali and Jahan, who are journalists posing as production engineers. The arrive in a Kurdish village to document the locals’ mourning rituals as they anticipate the death of an old woman. Behzad is forced to slow down and appreciate the lifestyle of the village.

The cast includes Behzad Dorani, Noghre Asadi, Roushan Karam Elmi and Bahan Ghobadi.
