Four caught after 15kg of cannabis found in suitcase

YKAN police drugs chief Stelios Serghides

FOUR people were arrested on Friday after a 33-year-old man was caught at Larnaca airport with 15 kilos of cannabis in his suitcase.

According to police, the drug squad Ykan had received a tip that the man, who had been on a return flight from Brussels, would have the drugs and following an inspection of his luggage, 28 plastic bags containing 500 grams of cannabis each, were found in his suitcase.

He was arrested for questioning and police also arrested a 35-year-old man who was waiting for the 33-year-old outside the terminal building.

The 35-year-old, who was with his wife, consented to having his car and home searched where police found traces of drugs and €20,000 in cash. He was subsequently arrested.

Another two men, aged 25 and 35 from Nicosia but living in Famagusta were also arrested in connection with the case. They were stopped by police while in their cars near their Famagusta residences.

The 35-year-old tried to drive off but was stopped by police.

Investigators believe the four are part of a drug ring which supplies narcotics to primarily younger people.
