Planning for Maronites’ return proceeding in north

The Maronite village of Kormakitis

A meeting was held at the office of Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci on Thursday to continue planning for the return of Maronites to their villages in the north.

According to the statement from Akinci’s office, the meeting discussed legal, financial, technical and social aspects of the return process.

During the meeting, chaired by Akinci’s ‘undersecretary’, Gurdal Hudaoglu, a sub-committee was established with the task of involving the Maronites in the process. The participants of the meeting –  officials of the ‘prime-minister’s office, of the ‘ministries’ of finance and interior, the Turkish embassy and military personnel – planned the next steps to be taken. The next meeting of the council will take place on August 16.

The political decision to allow Maronites to return to their villages was taken on July 26, 2017.
