Fire destroys 15 hectares in Koutrafas

A wildfire that broke out on Sunday near the village of Koutrafas, about 40 kilometres west of Nicosia, destroyed 15 hectares of vegetation, the Cyprus News Agency reported.

The Cyprus Fire Service was notified at 1.44 pm on Sunday and the Lakatamia fire station and the rural fire stations of Evrychou and Peristerona dispatched four fire fighting vehicles to Koutrafas, the CNA said citing the fire service. The forestry department also sent three fire-fighting vehicles and an aircraft aided by two tractors from the Koutrafas community which helped put the fire under controlled at around 3pm.

From August 11, at 6am until Monday, 6am, fire fighters received 80 calls, 35 of which concerned wildfires, 37 requests for special assistance and false calls, the CNA said.
