Boy critical after near-drowning

A four-year-old boy is in critical condition in Nicosia’s Makarios hospital after he nearly drowned in Paralimni on Monday.

According to police, his 12-year-old sister found the boy at the bottom of a swimming pool at a Paralimni apartment where the family from Syria is staying for a holiday.

While attempting to take him out of the pool she slipped and they both fell on the steps of the pool.

The boy is believed to have sustained a head injury by the fall. Two residents who found that he was not breathing and had no pulse managed to resuscitate him before he was rushed to Famagusta hospital and put on a ventilator.

No fractures or internal bleeding were detected but there was some fluid in the boy’s lungs.

At around 8pm he was transferred to Makarios children’s hospital in Nicosia where he is being treated.

He is in critical but stable condition.
