On Saturday the European Capital of Culture Pafos 2017 will take us on a journey of emotions, while the Lingua Franca Ensemble will be our leaders on the search for euphoria of the soul and the mind.
Musicians from Cyprus, Greece and Germany form this dynamic ensemble, which will perform in the context of the Travelling Stage. Members of the ensemble carry with them their personal and musical experiences on a musical quest, during which the traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean meet with Western elements and create a colourful musical landscape.
Michalis Cholevas, Giannis Koutis, Michalis Kouloumis and Ruven Ruppik create and perform music with respect to the character of modal music cultures. With this respect and dedication to music, the ensemble was selected in 2015, out of many other ensembles from all over the world, to participate in the Sharq Taronalari festival. The musicians were awarded with the Soul of Devotees Special Award by the committee of the competition.
The ensemble will perform pieces from its album entitled Ephemera. This album is a collection of original compositions that came to life when Koutis, Cholevas and Kouloumis met in Cyprus and formed the Lingua Franca Ensemble. Ruppik joined soon after. The album captures all kinds of moments – moments when the listener almost hears the laughter of a carefree child, others when the music seems imbued with the sound of longing for the one you miss, and still others when the stage from grief to acceptance becomes clear.
After performances in Greece and Spain, the ensemble will entertain the crowd in Paphos, where cultures come together under a bridge of music.
