A 77-year-old woman from Sotira was killed early on Friday in a head-on collision on the Dherynia to Sotira road.

Panayiota Pentafka was the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the 5.30am crash at the entrance to Sotira. The 71-year-old driver of the other vehicle, Maria Theophanous, was seriously injured but her condition was not life threatening, doctors said.

The two women had not been wearing their seatbelts. Both were trapped inside their vehicles and had to be freed by the fire service.

They were rushed to Famagusta hospital where Pentafka was pronounced dead on arrival.

Theophanous is being treated for multiple injuries.
