€17,700 fine for illegal cigarettes

A criminal investigation has been launched

A 27-year-old resident of Paphos has paid €17,700 after a large amount of cigarettes and tobacco which were imported illegally were found in his possession on Sunday afternoon.

Police officers found 21,200 cigarettes and 34 kilos of tobacco in his vehicle which were not labelled in Greek and Turkish, an indication that tax hadn’t been paid when they were imported.

Preliminary investigations suggest the goods came from the north.

The Paphos resident paid the money in an out-of-court settlement and was released, while the tobacco was confiscated.
