Government and parties seeking alternative dates for presidential elections

Parties and the government were looking at alternative dates for next year’s presidential elections after concerns were raised that abstention would be high because the initial dates under consideration clashed with the carnival celebrations.

A meeting is on the cards in the first 10 days of September to discuss the matter and make final decisions.

The head of the election service said the dates being considered now were January 28 and February 4. It followed the reaction from parties and others who expressed concern over the possibility of high abstention on February 18 and 25 since the dates coincided with the carnival.
