Police seek suspect who escaped drugs bust

Police on Tuesday were still seeking a suspect who evaded arrest the previous night during a drug bust involving gunshots on Nicosia’s Tseri Avenue.

Drug squad officers arrested a 25-year-old Paphos man and seized three kilos of cannabis during the operation involving the police firing shots to stop two suspects in a car.

It happened at around 8.30pm when drug squad officers acting on a tip-off sought to stop the suspects.

The driver accelerated in a bid to escape, forcing officers to use their pistols to get the car to stop.

Police said the suspects fled on foot while the car was still in motion on a side road, eventually crashing into a lamppost and coming to a halt.

Officers managed to apprehend the passenger of the car, whom they said was known to them. A packet containing one kilo of cannabis was found on the street, falling from the passenger door when the suspects fled the car.

Two more kilos were found inside the car during a subsequent search in the presence of the 25-year-old.

The man was brought to court on Tuesday and was remanded in custody for eight days.

Reports said he refused to co-operate with police.
