A musical Friday awaits

Friday is starting to be the new Saturday with music events popping up everywhere. Jazz is on the up and up lately, but that doesn’t mean that orchestra music is taking a back seat. Limassol and Nicosia has it all, all you have to do is take your pick.

Starting off with the capital, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra will begin its artistic season on Friday with a community outreach concert under the name Warm Autumn Night’s Music at Faneromeni square. The concert will not only mark the start of the orchestra’s new musical season, it will also welcome on board its new artistic director and chief conductor Jens Georg Bachmann.

The orchestra is set to go on a musical journey from Spain to a sunrise over the Sahara and from Hungary to Cyprus with pieces by Georges Bizet, Astor Piazzolla, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Gioachino Rossini, and Johannes Brahms. But that’s not all. The journey will include a co-pilot in the form of popular Cypriot baritone Kyros Patsalides, who promises to raise everyone’s spirits with operatic favourites. Patsalides will also perform Greek Hassapiko pieces and Greek-Cypriot songs.

Now to Limassol and jazz. Swiss singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Veronika Stalder will do what she does best at the Pattihio theatre – that is, creating a unique sound by blending world, folk and jazz music together.

Stalder’s true talent lies in improvisation. By being able to take a sound wherever the mood takes her, she is able to tell stories and paint pictures for the audience to hear and see.

Since the age of six she has been playing the violin. Getting into the swing of things early gave her the chance to explore the depth and width of music, something that took her to Ireland, where she developed her interest in folk and traditional music.

Stalder will be joined on Friday by the Leonid Nesterov Trio – Andreas Stefanou on Drums, Nicolas Tryphonos on bass and Leonid Nesterov on keyboards.
