Plastic pollution the focus of World Oceans Day

Swimmers, lifeguards and the Spanish ambassador were among those marking World Oceans Day at the Paphos municipal baths beach on Saturday.

The event began with a clean-up of the beach at the municipal baths and the seabed.

The main focus of this year’s World Oceans Day is plastic pollution and cleaning the ocean of marine litter.

Participating were the Paphos winter swimmers, divers, hunters, lifeguards, Akti Project and Research Centre, and the Spanish ambassador, Angel Lossada.

The head of Akti, coastal engineer Xenia Loizidou, said that microplastics have entered the human food chain through fish and plastic is the most prevalent type of marine debris.

Microplastics, she said, are a hidden danger.
