Festival takes on Cypriot sounds

The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra’s concert series Cypriots’ Sounds will open the seventh Festival of New Music on Wednesday in Limassol and Thursday in Nicosia.

The concert series, organised by the Centre of Cypriot Composers, will present the world premieres of contemporary orchestral works composed especially for the occasion by composer-members of the centre.

Under the baton of the orchestra’s new artistic director Jens Georg Bachmann, the orchestra will present world premiers of Protest by Tasos Stylianou, Liquids by Georgia Christoforou, Emmoni by Georgios Stavrou and If I Die… she Said by Andreas Moustoukis.

Stylianou studied music in New York and his work Protest is formed around schematic sound-rearrangements of different magnitude and colour. Although different, each sound represents each one of us.

Christoforou studied at the Ionian University in Corfu, Greece. Liquids uses music to bring us face to face with moments that are like drops, appearing unexpectedly and evaporating just as soon as they came into our lives.

Stavrou, who is a composer, researcher, pedagogue and guitarist, has had his work performed by established ensembles. He has done extensive research on Ancient Greek philosophy and he has lectured at the ARTE Music Academy in Nicosia.

Moustoukis studied at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. A number of his works have been performed by international orchestras. He has written, among others, chamber music, works for solo instruments and large-scale works.

The rest of the festival programme will feature the Nieuw Ensemble from the Netherlands, the Chronos Ensemble from Cyprus, the Centre’s electroacoustic music ensemble as well as the Dutch composer Joel Bons, who will present a series of lectures.

There will be a free bus leaving from Paphos for the Limassol performance. To reserve your place on the bus, send an email to [email protected] at least three days before the concert.
