Nearly 43kg of hookah tobacco seized by customs at Larnca airport

Almost 43kg of hookah tobacco were seized on Saturday at Larnaca Airport in the lugggae of an Egyptian passenger arriving from Cairo.
According to a press release from the Customs Department a “suspicious package” was found in the luggage by scanners.

During the physical check of the baggage, 42.7kg of tobacco was found. “The tobacco was hidden in different bag with dual purpose, in food storage containers and in plastic boxes where it was on the bottom under various kinds of food,” the customs department said.

Unpaid taxes on the tobacco would have amounted to €8,925. The passenger was arrested for fraudulent evasion of duties and taxes and illegal possession, while the tobacco was seized.

The Customs Department accepted an out-of-court settlement for the amount due and the passenger was released.
