Defence Minister Christoforos Fokaides met on Monday with German State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Defence Marcus Grubel at the Andreas Papandreou military airbase in Paphos.
Speaking after the meeting, Fokaides said that Cyprus has recently upgraded its bilateral relations with Germany and had signed an agreement for the exchange of services, while various cooperation programmes are being developed.
Fokaides said they discussed various issues concerning cooperation on a bilateral and European level.
He added that Cyprus has been providing facilities to a German task force in UNFIIL, the UN’s peacekeeping force in Lebanon, noting that Grubel thanked Cyprus for its assistance and the role it plays within the EU, in the light of the new defence union, with the establishment of Pesco, of which Cyprus is a founding member.
Fokaides said that Cyprus was cooperating with Germany and its other partners in order to achieve the best possible protection and security of the EU and European interests, especially in the direction of addressing threats and crises, and creating conditions of stability and security.
He furthermore noted that Cyprus has expressed its readiness and will to contribute in this direction with the use of the airbase in Paphos and the naval base in Zygi.
