A 37-year-old man suspected of smuggling 38 migrants into Cyprus was remanded for eight days on Wednesday by Nicosia district court.
He was arrested a day earlier and faces charges in connection with assisting third country nationals to illegally enter or stay in the Republic as well as people smuggling.
The migrants, 33 men, one woman and four children were in a boat that was towed into the Kato Pyrgos harbour by a police vessel around 1am on Tuesday after it was located in the sea nearby.
It had been spotted at around 8:50pm on Monday heading towards Pyrgos by officers on duty. By midnight, the boat was two nautical miles north of Kato Pyrgos.
Civil defence and social welfare officers visited the migrants to offer assistance while all 38 were taken to the Kokkinotrimithia reception centre near Nicosia after their details were recorded.
