Plenty of festive events before Big Day

At this point in time, it’s basically just the promise of another glass of glühwein that’s keeping us ploughing away at Christmas as in the run-up to the Big Day holiday happenings are hotting up faster than the mince pies! Here are just a few of the Christmas events taking place in the coming week…

From concerts to bike rides, it’s all still seasonal go in the capital. Down at Strovolos Municipal Theatre, December 21 sees a charity concert of epic proportions, organised by the Pancyprian Association for children with cancer and related diseases ‘One Dream One Wish’ in cooperation with the Austrian Embassy in Cyprus. Entitled Viennese Christmas, the concert is set to be a musical meld of the local and foreign: internationally-acclaimed sopranos Gina Poulou (Greece) and Theano Makariou (Germany) and the renowned baritone Michael Georgiou (Great Britain) cooperating with pianist Annini Tsouti, the Concordia String Quartet and the local Acropolis Music Academy Adults and Children’s Choirs.

If you’re looking for more of an outdoor experience, there are two very different events to enjoy this week. On Saturday December 23, a communal bike ride round the city promises a shot of seasonal cheer (and athleticism) for all ages. If you’ve already scoffed too many After Eights, you can put this one down as exercise: all you need is your riding gear (helmet, bike etc) and perhaps a red nose to add to the festivities. Beginning at the Old GSP carpark at 10am, and appropriate for all ages, this one-and-a-half hour ride will take in all the Christmassy delights of the Old Town.

For those who prefer a little less exertion in their festive fun, the ongoing Christmas Fairyland is probably worth a visit. Based just off the highway (yes, the place with all the lights opposite the old Orphanides), this seasonal staple offers fun for all! Trampolines, rollercoasters and carousels along with nightly performances from various local groups are the order of the day and it’s ongoing till January 7.

Down on the coast, the biggest event of the season (other than the Christmas Wonderland taking place at the Old Port) is probably the Russian Circus on Ice’s version of Alice in Wonderland, which takes place at the Pattihio Theatre on December 23 and 24. As the title suggests, this is no ordinary take on Lewis Carroll’s masterpiece; what we’re looking at here, in the words of organisers, is an amalgam of “exciting circus figure skaters, fantastically beautiful choreography, bewitching scenery, and spectacular lighting effects!” Now, tickets for the spectacle don’t come cheap but if you’re looking for a Christmas show to remember, then this “unforgettable grandiose show on ice” might be just the thing.

Ongoing until January 7, the Magic Christmas Village in Masterland is another Limassol spectacular. “Miracles, joy, entertainment, gifts and crafts, competitions and a real Christmas Bazaar” are all on offer, as part of the “marvellous programme full of New Year surprises, Christmas Fairytales and Magic.” Along with a bubble show, a fire show, face painting, cooking and craft classes, and several parties of various types, the Masterland experience promises a “seven-metre tree with unique decorations and lights, with a Christmas tree lightening [sic] ceremony every day!”

Lastly (and catering to the more cultured Christmas fan) two jazz concerts will be bringing festive music-making to the masses in the coming week. The first, taking place at the Rialto in Limassol on December 22, is titled Xmass Jazz, and will see acclaimed jazz musician Katerina Mina present a repertoire which includes such seasonal favourites as Santa Baby, I’ll be Home for Christmas, and White Christmas. The second, A Magical Jazz Christmas Concert, takes place at Technopolis 20 in Paphos on December 23, and features “the creativity of the two jazz masters and long-time collaborators Giorgos Krasidis (saxophone) and the Giorgos Morphitis (piano) in a spiritual and soulful Christmas delight.”
