Expanding horizons and artistic experience

ISOP hosts Chinese dancers

As part of the celebrations of its 30th anniversary, The International School of Paphos (ISOP) hosted a spectacular cultural exchange event on its premises. The dancers, producers and artists of the “Shaanxi CHG Performing Arts Company” traveled all the way from Xi’an, China, and performed parts of the historical masterpiece “The Song of Everlasting Sorrow”.

The event, which took place early in December, was organised by Ms. Haini Wang from the Paphos China Desk in coordination with ISOP’s staff and pupils. It was attended by many distinguished guests, including His Excellency, the Economic and Commercial Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy, Mr. Wang Yaping, the Mayor of Polis, Mr.  Papachristofi, the President of the Paphos Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Demetriades, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of The International School of Paphos, Mr. Aristodemou, as well as students, parents, teachers and other staff.

The masterful dancing, colourful costumes and accompanying explanations of Chinese traditions and history combined to leave a lasting impression. The audience also enjoyed a group of ISOP pupils performing the dance “Kalamatianos” and was captivated by the angelic voice of Year 11 student Polina Kapona, who sang the traditional Cypriot song “To Yiasemi”.

Welcoming the visitors, ISOP’s Managing Director, Mrs. Aristi Andriotis, said: “With the growing population of expatriated families choosing Paphos as their second home, we are privileged that cultural exchanges such as this one take place in our school, expanding the horizons and artistic experience of our pupils. We are a school community of many nationalities (42 this year) that for 30 years have co-existed harmoniously and learn from each other, in and out of the classroom’’.
