DP WORLD Limassol hosts panel discussion for shipping industry

DP World Limassol hosted an inaugural panel discussion on the Cyprus shipping industry at the Limassol Port New Passenger Terminal, bringing together More than 350 shipping professionals, government officials and other industry stakeholders on Wednesday January 17th 2018. DP World Limassol was the Platinum Sponsor of the event titled “Shipping: an industry of Passion, Knowledge and Experienced – Part 3”, fitting with the company’s vision of being an economic driver for the country.

The Panel Discussion was organised for the third consecutive year by the business consulting company, Maravilhosa, and held under the auspices of the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr. Marios Demetriades. The event’s main purpose was to raise awareness about the shipping sector among Cypriots and foster debate amongst industry experts on opportunities in the shipping sector and investing in commercial infrastructure to bring long-term growth to Cyprus. The panelists and speakers included among others, DP World Limassol’s General Manager, Mr. Charles Meaby, the CEO of Columbia Marlow Holding Ltd, Mr. Mark O’Neil, the Acting Secretary General of Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Europe, Mr. Andreas Chrysostomou and the Managing Director of SAFETY4SEA, Mr. Apostolos Belokas.

During the delivery of his keynote speech, Mr. Demetriades stressed the important role of the shipping sector to Cypriot economic growth and highlighted that Cyprus is the third largest international ship register in the EU. Moreover, Mr. Demetriades stated that the establishment of the Deputy Ministry of Shipping in March 2018, will substantially assist towards the further development of the Cyprus Shipping.

On his part, during his presentation titled “Nurturing and Sustaining Cyprus Shipping – ‘The Limassol Port Terminal Operator perspective’”, the General Manager of DP World Limassol said that the company aims at regenerating the Limassol Port and underlined that the investments made so far in infrastructure and equipment have improved efficiency at the terminal. Mr. Meaby added: “We are particularly proud to host this important and high-profile event at the premises of the New Passenger Terminal. Bringing together key stakeholders of the shipping industry in order to engage in a dialogue is indicative of the emphasis given by DP World Limassol to contribute to the development of this sector”.

Mr. Meaby added that “DP World Limassol, in partnership with the government, is focusing on positioning Cyprus as a key player in the shipping and oil and gas sectors while the New Passenger Terminal will significantly contribute to strengthening the sustainable development of tourism.”
