High levels of dust set to last till Thursday

Very high levels of atmospheric dust were reported on Monday morning in Nicosia, Limassol and Paphos, the labour inspection department said.

A red alert was issued for Nicosia, Paphos and Limassol where the hourly concentration of respirable particulate matter with a diameter smaller than 10mm (PM 10) was higher than 200 μg/m3 (microgrammes per cubic metre).

By 9.30am it increased to 407 μg/m3 in Nicosia, 336.2 μg/m3 in Limassol and 289.4 μg/m3 in Paphos.
The safe limit is 50 μg/m3.

According to the Met office the dust levels will remain high until Thursday.

Employers are required to take appropriate measures to protect employees working in open spaces and vulnerable groups such as the elderly and people with health problems should stay inside whenever possible.
