Paphos mayor Phedonas Phedonos continued his tirade against the police force on Wednesday, when he again accused authorities of not acting on information he had given them about circles in the underworld.
In a Facebook post, he said “Mr [Justice] Minister, the manufacturer of almost all bombs in Cyprus is a specific person in the suburbs of Limassol. The chief knows, would you like me to come in and give a statement?”
Phedonos made headlines again after the shoot-out on the weekend in Ypsonas, Limassol, that left two officers injured, one of whom is being treated in Israel.
The mayor said he had personally informed police that Elias Mouzos led a huge underworld ring in Paphos.
Mouzos, 38, was arrested in connection with the gunfight after a manhunt on Tuesday.
Phedonos charged police had done nothing about it, putting the authorities and the justice minister on the defensive.
In a statement on Wednesday, police said the public should trust the force and in both this case, as well as the double murder in Strovolos of Giorgos Hadjigeorgiou, 50, and his 59-year-old wife Dina Sergiou.
In both cases, four people were arrested in a matter of days, all of whom have been remanded in custody.
Meanwhile, Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou said he was willing to work with all political parties in a bid to clampdown on corruption, urging them to pass into a law a bill on monitoring telephone communications.
