Fear porn in Nicosia as Bibi grandstands on Iran

Leave it to Cyprus and Anastasiades – eager to play the big statesman – to afford the deranged Benjamin Netanyahu the forum to grandstand on Iran, and this only days after Bibi became a laughing stock with his dog and pony show anent Tehran’s alleged nuclear weapons programme.

Bibi, needless to say, was chomping at the bit. Speaking at the tripartite jamboree in Nicosia on Tuesday, May 8, Bibi went into overdrive, warning – get this – that left unchecked, Iran will devour the nations straddling the Mediterranean.

And I quote: “[Iran] is now seeking to implant very dangerous weapons in Syria to be used against Israel for the specific purpose of our destruction. I think it’s in the interest of everyone to prevent this Iranian aggression. If they reach the Mediterranean, they wish to establish military naval bases in the Mediterranean for Iranian ships and Iranian submarines. This is a palpable threat against all of us.”

Fear porn at its most disgusting, but trust Bibi to up his game. Next he’ll be warning us – with more props no doubt – that Iran possesses a Doomsday machine which it has parked in outer space and will use to blast the planet to smithereens. Take cover!

Kidding aside, anyone with two neurons and a working synapse knows it is not Iran that poses a threat to the neighbourhood, but Israel. From ‘mowing the lawn’ in Gaza every couple of years, to attacking Lebanon, and to the dozens of bombing raids in Syria – effectively acting as ISIS’s air force – Israel’s actions speak for themselves. Yet it is Iran who is the rogue nation, we are told.

Iran, with its non-existent ‘secret’ nuclear programme. Meanwhile Israel gets a pass for its own nuclear programme and arsenal, which it has failed to disclose. Incidentally, Israel stole nuclear weapons technology from the United State. Reality inverted.

And how exactly, pray tell CyBC, does a sovereign nation like Syria get demoted to ‘the Syrian regime’? I’d love to take a gander at your terminology guidebook.

So Bibi is Anastasiades’ new BFF. That is some company you are keeping, Mr President.

Or the Saudis who’ve bombed Yemen into oblivion. On March 29, the Cypriot foreign ministry released a statement condemning the firing of rockets by the Houthis on Riyadh. Interesting. But have you ever heard Nicosia weigh in on the countless Saudi attacks on Yemen?

Oh I know, it’s realpolitik.

To Anastasiades and the other brainiacs deciding our policy: are you sure you want to ally little Cyprus to aggressor states with such a dark track record? Not to mention that not-so-nice things tend to happen to Israel’s ‘friends’. Take the United States where in California any criticism of Israel on college campuses is branded anti-Semitism, curtailing free speech.

Israeli soldiers kill and maim dozens of civilian protesters on the Gaza border fence. Hey Nicosia, any comment? Crickets. Mazel tov, Mr President. But do not for a moment think you speak for the Cypriot people or that these choices will soon be forgotten.
