Man dies as car overturns on highway

A resident of Nicosia, 35-year-old Dimitris Georgiades, died in a road accident on Sunday evening.

He was driving on the motorway from Nicosia to Larnaca when he lost control of his vehicle just before the Rizoelia roundabout and his car overturned after colliding with a railing at 10.40pm.

The driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was trapped and had to be freed by the fire services.

He was pronounced dead upon his arrival at Larnaca general hospital. A post mortem found he had died from multiple injuries to the spine and vital organs. A blood sample was taken and sent to the state lab for toxicological examinations.

Police are investigating the conditions under which the crash happened.
