Ten-year-old Stavros Giorgallis’ funeral was held on Tuesday at 2:30 at the church of Ayios Epiphanios in his home village of Alethriko.
The boy died on Friday after falling while playing basketball at school. He was rushed to Larnaca general hospital after the fall, where doctors at the A&E department ran tests and conducted an X-ray.
The doctors found nothing wrong at the time and the boy was sent home. He was rushed back two hours later in critical condition.
A radiologist later found that the X-ray showed a skull fracture, according to police.
Following a CT scan in Larnaca, Giorgallis was sent to Nicosia General for surgery after the scan showed a haematoma.
The boy died on the operating room table.
Education Minister Costas Hambiaouris was present at the boy’s funeral on behalf of the president. The funeral was paid by the state and was also attended by dozens of people and MPs.
Flags were flown at half-mast in all schools on the island in honour of the boy.
*Report has been amended to reflect the fact that doctors found nothing wrong with the child initially, replacing ‘after showing no initial signs of trauma, the boy was sent home.’
