Employers responsible for health and safety says minister

Labour Minister Zita Emilianidou

Labour Minister Zeta Emilianidou said on Wednesday the labour inspection department could not check all establishments in Cyprus and urged all involved to come up with suggestions to boost health and safety.

The minister was responding to criticism over last Saturday’s accident in a Strovolos restaurant in which a 25-year-old woman died after she was crushed by shelves.

Odyssea Iacovou went to get something from the storeroom when one of the metal shelves holding drinks and water containers toppled on top of her.

A criminal investigation has been launched.

Emilianidou said she had raised the issue of the rise of workplace accidents at the labour advisory body and was awaiting recommendations.

“To think that the labour inspection department can check all establishments in Cyprus is wrong in my opinion,” the minister said.

She added that employers must observe the necessary health and safety measures for their employees.
