Minister of Education Costas Hampiaouris and Rector of the University of Sorbonne, Gilles Pecout, have exchanged views on cooperation between the University of Sorbonne and the universities of Cyprus.
According to a press release by the ministry, their meeting took place in Paris on Saturday during the Hambiaouris’ visit to the historic university.
The Rector of University of Sorbonne stressed France’s interest in further strengthening cooperation with Cyprus in the fields of education, higher education and culture.
The minister’s visit to the Sorbonne University took place on the sidelines of his visit to France where he participated in the Ministerial Conference on the European Higher Education Area.
The Minister stressed the fact that Cyprus and France have excellent cooperation and mutual understanding over the years based on mutual respect, shared values and principles.
He also referred to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in 2016 between the ministry of education and culture of the Republic of Cyprus and the ministry of foreign affairs and international development of the French Republic in the field of education and linguistic cooperation for the period 2016-2019.
He also noted that the University of Cyprus has already cooperation with the University of Sorbonne in relation to the Department of French and European Studies.
Pecout thanked the minister for his visit and stressed his country’s interest in further strengthening cooperation with Cyprus in the areas of education, higher education and culture.
He also referred to the importance of the French-Cypriot school in Nicosia and proposed the twinning of a Paris-based school with a school in Nicosia.
Pecout accepted the invitation by Hambiaouris to visit Cyprus to continue the consultations with the participation of the Rectors of the Cypriot universities. He expressed his intention to be accompanied by Rectors of other Paris universities.
