President Nicos Anastasiades on Monday met singer Eleni Foureira, who represented Cyprus in this year’s Eurovision song contest winning second place, the best the island ever achieved.
The president congratulated the singer and the state broadcaster for promoting Cyprus across the globe, saying Foureira and the song, Fuego (fire), were the best entry ever.
Foureira said it was an honour to have represented Cyprus and an honour to be at the presidential palace.
“I am very happy that we have succeeded with the CyBC to make Europe talk about Cyprus, even for a while,” she said. “That was our goal from the start, to make an impression.”
Anastasiades praised the CyBC’s choice of singer and composer, Alex Papaconstantinou, as well as the group that took part.
“What matters is the stage presence and the performance, which was exceptional,” he said.
