A fire that had been raging late on Wednesday near the village of Pretori in Paphos was completely extinguished at around 11pm, the fire service announced on Thursday morning.

Due to high winds, the fire was moving towards the Limassol village of Arsos and burned 10 hectares of wild plants and dried weeds. Engines of the fire service, the game service and the forestry department worked to put the fire out.

Director of the fire service Markos Trangalos said the fire seemed to have broken out at a point a point where a fire last year had been put out in a remote area full off dried vegetation.

He said no residential area had been under threat while fire officers stayed in the area throughout the night to make sure the fire did not start again.
