Kids find their imagination in the summertime

Having the kids out of school for three months is a long time – just ask any parent. To ensure that they keep entertained, they continue to learn and to give them creative outlets, there are lots of activities and workshops lined-up for the summer months.

Two of these events in Nicosia will take place in July at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation and the Leventis Gallery.

After the success of the Culture Academy for Children held last July, the cultural foundation will renew its appointment with children in collaboration with the Summer School in Homer of the UCL Department of Greek and Latin.

The Summer Adventures with Homer/ Children Academy 2 will include role playing, interactive teaching of Homeric texts, creative writing and animation techniques drawing inspiration from the heroes of the Homeric epic, which will provide the experimentation basis for an educational summer experience.

The children will be led within by philologist Christiana Michael, author and creative writing coach Stavros Lambrakis, 3D artist and animator Electra Chrysanthou and assistant director and film making motivator Eleni Nicolaou.

The activities will run in three sections, from July 2 to 6, from July 9 to 13 and July 16 to 20, and each day will run from 8am until 2pm. Each section will accommodate a group of ten to 12 participants aged nine to 11-year-olds, 11 to 13-year-olds and 13 to 15-year-olds.

The cost for each activity section is €100 per child (with a 15 per cent discount for siblings) with free breakfast.

Also in July children who are interested in history and the theatre will have a ball at the Leventis gallery where theatre educator Loukia Pierides will run a two-week summer programme introducing children to the magical world of art and theatre.

Pierides will use the paintings in the gallery’s collection as inspirational starting points. From there participants will engage in a wide range of theatrical and craft activities, including costume and set design, character creation, and voice and movement exercises, among others. They will be introduced to the history of theatre and will work together to create their own play, which will be performed for their parents at the end of the summer school.

The summer programme will run from July 2 to 13, from 8.30am to 1pm. The participation cost is €200 and to book a spot in the programme call 22 668838 or send an email to [email protected]

This is a unique way for children from eight to 12-years-old to find their own voice, gain confidence and develop their imagination.
