Elderly man arrested in connection with arson

Police on Friday arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of setting two fires at the villages of Kantou and Sotira in Limassol the previous day.

The first fire started between 4.30pm and 5pm at Kantou landfill, police said. It was put out by the fire service after it burned two hectares of dry grass and rubbish.

Shortly afterwards, a second fire broke out at the village of Sotira, eventually burning two hectares of wild shrub and dry grass.

Following an investigation, authorities determined that the fires had been set deliberately. They arrested the 72-year-old after securing evidence against him, police said.

The man denied involvement in the incidents but his claims have not convinced the investigators who have not ruled out him also being implicated in several fires that broke out in the same area last week.
