Raise a pint to a super beer festival

Because the first Limassol Beer Festival last year was such a success the organisers are set to repeat the process again this year.

The magic formula includes three days of over 100 kinds of beer – both local and international – live screenings of the World Cup, lots of food to choose from (burgers, ribs, pizza, pulled pork and more), live entertainment, beer games with lots of prizes and a playground where the kids can play.

The beer fun will begin on Thursday with a performance by local musician and singer Savvas Isovitis. Isovitis will entertain and open the festival with some of his own compositions and a number of cover songs.

The rocking mood will continue on Friday with a performance by the Italian reggae band Mellow Mood. The band was formed in 2005 when most of its members were in high school together. The band released its first album, Move, in 2009, which received international acclaim. Thanks to their live shows, the European reggae festival Rototom Sunsplash named Mellow Mood best Italian reggae band and ranked them third at European level in the same year. The two singles Only You and Dance Inna Babylon now have a total of more than 50 million views on YouTube.

After a line-up change, the band went back into the studio to record their second album Well Well Well and were signed by Italy’s most important independent label La Tempesta in 2012. The band’s sound and live performances made it a protagonist in a new generation of reggae artists. A major European tour followed and led the band to play in 12 countries. Their next major milestone came in 2015 when they released their own sub-label La Tempesta Dub.

Saturday will fuse the Caribbean sound together with Greek music elements and Greek lyrics when the Greek band Locomondo will join the beer-loving fun.

The seven-member band is the first Greek band to record in Jamaica. Their success has expanded beyond Greece and they have given performances in Germany and the Netherlands with great success. They have also entered the Radio France Internationale charts with a tune from their first album Stin Athina, showcasing the unique nature of their music.

Sunday is double whammy with the band Mple and Lakis Papadopoulos. Mple, which has recently celebrated 20 years of rocking, always knows how to get the crowd charged up, especially with the scratchy and enchanting voice of lead singer Georgia Kefala. The band came together in 1996 with George Papapostolou on guitar, sax and vocals and George Parodis on lyrics. Mple’s first studio album Enhes (with lead singer Theodosia Tsatsou) set the tone for their dark and introspective sound. This album launched the band into instant success.

The rock atmosphere will continue with a performance by Greek actor, composer and singer Lakis Papadopoulos. Since the start of his career in 1983, Papadopoulos has released 21 albums and has written songs for other artists on 15 albums, so one thing is for sure, he won’t be stuck for things to sing.
