Over 800,000 vehicles were registered in the Republic at the end of 2016, according to the auditor-general.
During 2016, 34,563 vehicles were registered in the Republic, up 30.5 per cent on 2015 – 26,495, the report on the road transport department said.
Government revenue from registrations was €5.44m, a 28 per cent rise year-on-year. The report said 821,621 vehicles were registered at the end of 2016 compared with 797,263 the previous year.
According to the road transport department, 775,838 road permits had been issued, fetching €98.7m. At the same time, the owners of 133,594 vehicles had not paid their road tax. The figure includes 74,696 vehicles listed as being immobilized.
The department also struck off the registry 12,648 vehicles that did not have their road tax paid for three consecutive years.
