The Cyprus Symphony Orchestra will begin its new musical season with three performances this week. For these concerts, under the name Greetings From Vienna, the orchestra will be joined by soloist Philipp Jundt on the flute and conductor Jens Georg Bachmann.
Audiences will be able to enjoy the pieces Excerpts from Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus, D. 797 and Symphony no. 2 in B flat major, D. 125 by Franz Schubert and Flute concerto no. 1 in G major, K. 313 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Nicosia on Wednesday, in Limassol on Thursday and in Paphos on Friday.
In 1823, Schubert provided music for a play called Rosamunde, Furstin von Zypern, which failed miserably and closed in two nights. Ιt wasn’t until 1868 that it found success. He wrote his Second Symphony at the age of 17, which is a quite remarkable effort and decidedly grander in scale and outlook than his First Symphony.
While composinghis piece, in 1767, Mozart composer wrote a letter to his father regarding a commission for three flute concertos and four flute quartets and said “It’s not surprising I have been unable to finish them, for you know I become quite powerless when I am obliged to write for an instrument I can’t stand.”
However, not only did he eventually finish them, but there are no signs whatsoever in them that he disliked the flute.
