Competition for young innovators and scientists

In order to acquaint pupils and students as well as their teachers with scientific research procedures, the Research Promotion Foundation (RPF) has launched the annual competitions “Students in Research – Mera 2018-2019” and “Technology and Innovation in Education – Teke 2018-2019 “, in collaboration with the Centre for Educational Research and Evaluation (KEEA) of the Ministry of Education and Culture.

The aim of the competitions is to stimulate the creativity and the ingenuity of students and pupils attending primary and secondary schools, both public and private, and their active involvement in research and innovation activities.

The competition can involve groups of pupils and students of all levels of education who will conduct research work (the Mera competition) or create an innovative application/construction (the Teke competition). The closing date for submitting an application for participation for both competitions after an extension was granted is November 14. The teams that will participate in the contests will be invited to special training workshops to be held on November 27 and 28 in Nicosia and Limassol respectively, in order to receive information and training on how to carry out the research work/technical study. The final submission will take place next spring.

Winners of the Mera competition (lyceum level) will be able to take part in the London International Youth Science Forum, for which travel and subsistence expenses will be covered by the RPF. The winners will be nominated by a special evaluation committee with the participation of scientists/researchers.

In this year’s competition announcement, the RPF has made a symbolic move to promote girls’ participation in competitions but also, in an enlarged context, the active participation of women in research, technological development and innovation activities.

For more information and to submit an application form, interested parties can visit the RPF website www.research.org.cy.
