Jail sentence for man found with arms cache

Paphos District Court

Paphos criminal court on Thursday sentenced a 33-year-old man to two-and-a-half years in jail after finding him guilty of unlawful possession of firearms and explosives.

The man had been arrested on June 20 of this year after police searched three homes, the suspect’s vehicle, as well as various open-air locations in Paphos.

Police recovered a veritable arsenal of weapons which they were able to link to the man.

The cache included a sawed-off shotgun, an airgun, a metallic object containing explosive material, and a nylon bag containing explosive material of a gross weight of 1030 grams.

The search also uncovered several cartridges, shell cases of various calibres, a number of homemade bullets, a knife, a precision scale, two homemade rifle barrels, two shotgun parts, and two brass knuckle dusters.

The suspect had been remanded in custody the following day.
