Fascinated by Korean and Japanese culture and want to get a dose of it? Well here’s your chance! Newly-opened Spheresterion bar in old Nicosia and HallyuCY, an organisation that promotes Korean and East-Asian pop culture, are bringing an event that promises to be unique.
On November 11, the whole of Korea celebrates Pepero Day, the equivalent of the Western Valentine’s Day and now people in Cyprus have an occasion to join the festivities. In Korean culture the day involves the gifting or exchange of Pepero snacks, a line of chocolate-dipped cookie sticks, with the purpose of showing affection for friends and loved ones. The reason it happens on this particular day is because of the resemblance of Pepero sticks, which are vertical that mirror the shortened date of 11/11.
Though this isn’t the first time HallyuCY celebrates this day of love, it’s an event they organise every year and its main character – the Pepero chocolate-covered cookie sticks, or Pocky as they are known in Japan.
Hosted at Spheresterion for the first time, the games bar will open up its doors on Sunday November 11 exclusively for this event. And there’s lots to expect from homemade Pepero to K-POP, matcha drinks, homemade taiyaki (Japanese fish-shaped cake) and of course arcades and games as the specialisation of the bar.
Certainly a night to be remembered, honouring a culture that isn’t presented very often on the island.
