82-year-old re-arrested for role in explosives crimes

An 82-year-old man is being held in police custody for his involvement in a case of trying to destroy property with explosive substances. Three cases are being investigated against him.

The pensioner was presented at Paphos District Court on Saturday, where a judge ruled he be kept in custody for three days to help police with inquiries.

He was already being held in police custody with a 42-year-old in connection with the discovery of arms and explosives in Paphos last week.

According to police, he was re-arrested because they have evidence against him that he was involved in an attempt to destroy property on October 27.

The two men were originally arrested when there was evidence given against them in connection to an arms cache that was found in an abandoned house in the Paphos district in July 2011.

The 82-year-old has also been linked to the discovery, again in Paphos, of a home made explosive device in June 2014 in an open area of Paphos underneath some old tiles. It was ready to explode and was detonated by members of the explosives squad.

Nicosia and Paphos CID are investigating the cases.
