Police investigating woman’s murder (update 2)

A 56-year-old woman was stabbed to death in her car on Monday in what police believe had been a robbery-motivated crime in the small village of Ikos, in the Marathasa region.

Police said they were questioning a 40-year-old foreign national who was arrested hours after Yiannoula Hadjiyianni was found dead in her car with stab wounds to the upper part of her body.

The woman, a resident of Ikos, was found by a passer-by who notified police at around 1.15pm. A state pathologist later said she had multiple injuries, probably inflicted with a knife.

Police arrested the man a few hours later after an eyewitness placed him inside Hadjiyianni’s car earlier on. Reports said police found a large amount of cash on the man for which he could not provide a satisfactory explanation.

It is believed that the man had hitched a ride with the 56-year-old knowing that she worked for a grocery shop in nearby Kalopanayiotis and that she had the proceeds on her.

It was also reported that he had purchased a knife earlier in the day.
