US supports Cyprus’ right to exploit its natural wealth amid Turkish provocations

The United States recognizes the right of Cyprus to develop the resources in its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), a State Department spokesperson said late Tuesday.

Following the launch of an exploratory drilling by US energy giant Exxon Mobil in plot 10 of Cyprus’ EEZ, last Friday, a Turkish seismographic research vessel has entered plot 4, accompanied by Turkish warships.

“The US policy on Cyprus’s EEZ is longstanding and has not changed: The United States recognizes the right of the Republic of Cyprus to develop the resources in its Exclusive Economic Zone” a spokesperson of the State Department reiterated, replying to a question.

“We continue to believe the island’s oil and gas resources, like all of its resources, should be equitably shared between both communities in the context of an overall settlement,” he told reporters and noted that “we discourage any actions or rhetoric that increases tensions in the region”.
