A 20-year-old man from Nicosia was remanded on Monday for eight days after allegedly blackmailing three underage girls between the ages of 12 and 14 into send him their naked photos on social media.
The man was arrested on Sunday after police received three reports against him by underage girls.
According to the head of the police cybercrime unit, Andreas Anastasiades, the three girls, aged between 12 and 14, reported that the man had approached them through his Instagram account, and after chatting with them convinced them to send him their naked photos.
He then allegedly kept threatening them that he would publish the photos he had in his possession unless they sent him more photos.
Anastasiades said that it appears the suspect had approached other minors on social media and received photos from them too.
“Parents must be vigilant and supervise their children,” Anastasiades told state broadcaster CyBC.
He also warned against the use of social media by children as young as 12.
The suspect was, according to the girls’ reports, using different social media accounts to approach them.
Following a search in the 20-year-old’s house, police seized a mobile phone and a tablet. On the man’s mobile phone police found one of the fake social media accounts he was using.
He is being investigated for child sexual abuse and exploitation, child grooming, possession of child pornography and electronic forgery.
