Flat damaged in Paralimni fire

A fire on Friday evening caused extensive damage to a flat in Paralimni, Famagusta, the fire service said.

The service said it had received a call at around 10pm about a fire in a first-floor flat on Efterpis Street in the Kaparis area.

Two engines were dispatched and firefighters put the blaze in the two-storey building under control at 10.45pm.

The fire caused extensive damage to the sitting room but the smoke and the hot gases affected the entire one-bedroom flat.

The resident was absent at the time. The cause is under investigation.

In the past 24 hours, the fire service responded to 24 calls for assistance across the island – nine fires, including the one at Paralimni and 15 other incidents – six to pump water from flooded dwellings in Nicosia, Paphos, and Famagusta.
