What the European Football Championship 2024 hosting means to Germany

The European Football Championship 2024 will take place in Germany. The decision was made in Lyon, Switzerland, by the UEFA Executive Committee and voted by a secret ballot.

Despite a very good campaign, it was no certainty the 2024 Football Championship would be awarded to Germany. The main rival, Turkey, thought it had a great chance to win, having received a lot of attention as a credible competitor in terms of location, despite the political problems it was experiencing.

We always have winners and losers in such decisions. News sites like https://openodds.com/ anticipated the decision.

The locations for 2024 European Football Championship in Germany

The infrastructure and stadiums are already available in Germany, which played a big part in its bid. The locations selected for the football games are; Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Cologne, Dusseldorf, Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Leipzig. Some of the stadiums will be modernised or expanded. For example, even before the decision was made in favour of Germany, around 3.5 million euros had been put aside by the Dusseldorf city council for the modernisation of their stadium.

UEFA requirements make it necessary to expand the media areas in Düsseldorf and some other stadiums. The number of VIP boxes is also clearly regulated and must be met. As EFC Ambassador Philipp Lahm assured, Germany has modern stadiums, either revamped or rebuilt for the 2006 World Cup, meaning further work should be minimal to meet UEFA standards.

Germany last hosted the European Football Championship in 1988.

A four-time defeat of the European Championship bid for Turkey

Turkey’s bid for the 2024 European Football Championship was not its first. It placed bids in 2008, 2012 and 2016. The fourth consecutive loss of such a prestigious tournament will have come as a major disappointment given the investments made in their stadiums. Putting aside the political factors, as a location it would have been ideal for such a large sporting event. However, UEFA had also stated in its justification for the decision to favour Germany that Turkey had around 300,000 fewer seats available. This proved to be a disadvantage despite the expansion and modernisation of its football stadiums.

Football Germany needed this positive signal

After the premature end of their involvement in the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the mood was one of disappointment for German football fans. The outcome for the once-proud football nation was felt for months so the decision to award them the competition was a positive sign. If the right approach is taken, it can literally spur them on.

In hindsight, the decision made in 2017, to apply for the 2024 European Championship, proved to be absolutely correct. Six years from now, Germany will have to show the quality of football that won them a number of major footballing competitions over the years. To achieve this they will need to form a new, young talented team that will have a real chance of winning the title of European Champions in its own country.
