A Russian folk tale

The Cyprus-based Moscowia Russian Ballet Theatre will present the Christmas fairy-tale classical ballet Snow Maiden -Snegurochka next Saturday.

The atmosphere of this popular Russian fairy tale, with the music of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, is set to enchant children and parents alike, uniting the great themes of winter and Christmas: love, humanity, devotion, but also the idea of transience, and values the symbolism of giving.

Based on a traditional folk-tale set in the snow-covered landscape of the Russian countryside, the production follows Snow Maiden, the daughter of Frost and Spring, as she dances into the human world. Yearning to feel love but unable to, her heart is cold. Spring’s as her mother gives the Snow Maiden the feeling of love she desires, but her heart cannot bear its fire… She begins to see another side to her wishes, though for the humans of her area, the sun returns and brings back the light.

As acclaimed as Russian ballets are for their exquisite technique and immaculate performance, the bar is set high for this production as Tchaikovsky’s music is bound to leave an impression. Established in 1990 under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture of Russia, the Moscowia Russian Ballet is comprised of 46 young artists, all graduates from Moscow and St Petersburg ballet schools.

Running only for one day, there are two performances on show so children, elders, full-timers and just about anyone looking to be enchanted by a Russian Ballet can have the chance to.
