Police chief seeks public participation for ‘a better society’

Police chief Zacharias Chrysostomou

Police chief Zacharias Chrysostomou on Monday called on the public to cooperate with the police for a better and safer society.

In his Christmas message, Chrysostomou said that, already, a large part of society was already participating in the neighbourhood watch schemes with positive results.

“So, let us join forces for an even safer society,” Chrysostomou said.

Police, he said, welcome the new year with optimism and high expectations but also with a sense of duty and responsibility.

“Our primary concern is your own security and protection; the provision of high-quality services in society, so that conditions of order, security and serenity prevail,” he said.

Chrysostomou said that, through a process of reform and modernisation, “we continue with determination our multilevel work, which is the prevention and investigation of crime and the preservation of security and justice on our island.”

But in order to achieve these goals, which should also be the target of society, he said, collective effort is required.

The state-organised neighbourhood watch scheme got underway in Dhali in 2011 and has since spread to all of the towns and most villages. There are currently more than 100,000 people involved in the initiative nationwide.

Police first inform residents about crimes committed in their area through text messages and ask for information from residents concerning any suspicious or unusual activity. The messages also aim at informing residents so that they can take precautionary measures to protect themselves.
