Man rescued from sea is in serious condition

A man was said to be in serious condition on Thursday after being rescued from the sea by a passing container ship.

The man was spotted in an area 15 nautical miles northeast of Cape Greco.

According to a defence ministry press release, at 4.45pm the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (Jrcc) at Larnaca received an emergency dispatch from the captain of the Safmarine Nimba, a US-flagged ship.

Under severe weather conditions, police dispatched a helicopter to airlift the man from the ship. The helicopter returned to Larnaca airport at 6.15pm, and the man was immediately transferred to the town’s general hospital.
