Suspect in assault on police officer freed pending trial

Larnaca Courthouse

A 47-year-old man was referred for trial by the Larnaca district court on Friday after being arrested the day before for allegedly assaulting a police officer when they chased his vehicle from Pyla to Oroklini.

According to police, at around 4.40pm on Thursday, police stationed on Makarios Avenue in Pyla signalled to the 47-year-old driver to stop. Instead, he sped up and managed to escape. He was later arrested on the Larnaca-Dhekelia coastal road, close to the Oroklini fire station.

Police said that as officers approached the vehicle, the suspect began shouting, and kicked an officer who was taken to Larnaca general hospital A&E where he received first aid before being discharged.

The 47-year-old was released on Friday pending his trial, which was scheduled by the Larnaca district court for February 5, 2019.
