A fire broke out at midday on Friday in the engine room of the Castoro Sei pipelayer platform docked at the Eurogate terminal in Limassol.

According to the fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis, the fire has been placed under control, but it will take some hours to extinguish completely as the four fire trucks that are at the scene are using high-expansion foam.

All 172 people who were aboard the platform have safely disembarked.

The fire service is managing the situation in cooperation with the platform’s captain and mechanic, Kettis said, adding that the platform’s automatic fire extinguishing systems have also been activated.

The director of the fire service Marcos Trangolas told state broadcaster Cybc that all necessary safety measures have been taken.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

The platform, which belongs to the company Atlas, was stationed at the Limassol port for maintenance and was due to have departed for Israel in the coming days.
