CySO welcomes the new year with Strauss

Nothing says Happy New Year better than music by the Strauss family, so it’s only fitting that the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra rings in the New Year with Joseph Strauss’ Winter Joy Polka and Johann Strauss’ Emperor Waltz. Waltzes however also formed the mainstay of Tchaikovsky’s ballet music, and along with excerpts from the Russian composer’s three ballets, the CySO will also play excerpts from his opera Eugene Onegin, with the orchestra and conductor Jens Georg Bachmann joined by Paphos-based mezzo Anastasia Maximova Gonsales Moreau.

The choice of music follows a long and distinguished tradition.

The famous Vienna New Year’s Concert, the annual concert of classical music performed by the Vienna Philharmonic on the morning of New Year’s Day in Vienna, Austria is the music event which traditionally starts the New Year and is broadcast in many countries. The concert programmes always include pieces from the Strauss family – Johann Strauss I, Johann Strauss II, Joseph Strauss and Eduard Strauss.

As the artistic director and chief conductor of the CySO, Bachmann is at the helm of the national symphony orchestra. His appointment since the 2017-2018 season has increased the orchestra’s audience attendance by over 40 per cent, while broadening and differentiating the orchestra’s reach and activities from national radio and TV broadcasts to chamber concert appearances.

The artistry and musicianship of the German-born conductor has been praised by audiences, orchestras and the press on both sides of the Atlantic. His international career covers symphonic and opera productions in equal measure. Through his impressive artistic versatility, he has quickly become a sought after international artist for orchestras, opera houses and educational institutions alike.
