Man who threatened to self-harm with a knife in public placed in psychiatric care

The Athalassa Psychiatric Hospital

A 41-year-old man who caused a public disturbance in Zenon Pierides Square in Larnaca, allegedly threatening to harm himself with a knife on Tuesday evening was taken to Athalassa psychiatric hospital on Wednesday morning.

Police were told at around 9.30pm that a man holding a knife threatened to harm himself because he had left his wife in Iraq where he came from and was now regretting it.

Officers reportedly cleared the area to make sure he could not harm anybody.

After two hours of negotiation, they managed to disarm and arrest him.

He was first taken to a Larnaca police station and questioned and early in the morning taken to the psychiatric hospital in Nicosia.
